With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I am in bit of a all-things-heart mode. So when I came across a sparkly throw pillow cover on society6, I thought it would be a perfect valentine’s day present  if I change the design to a heart. As you can see in my inspiration images, sparkly metallic accents can glam up any interior. I especially love the effect the gold ones have.

The original pillow cover design on society6 is also very beautiful, and the surprising part is that the glitter on it is not real glitter but a print on the fabric. In this DIY, we will use actual glitter and seal it with Mod Podge so that the pillow won’t shed glitter wherever it’s placed!

Here’s what you will need:

  • Throw Pillow with Removable Cover
  • Super Fine Metallic Glitter (Martha Stewart/Jones Tones)
  • Mod Podge in Gloss
  • A Pencil & 2 Medium Size Brushes
  • Container to Mix Glitter & Mod Podge

Step 1: Remove the cover from the pillow and lay it flat with the front of the pillow cover facing up. If the cover is not made of a thick fabric, place a magazine or cardboard inside the cover so the mixture doesn’t seep from the front to the back of the cover.
Step 2: With a pencil, draw a heart in one of the corners of the pillow cover. Make it the size you like but make sure to leave space for the sprinkled glitter effect.
Step 3: To create the glitter mixture, add one part glitter to two parts Mod Podge in the container and stir thoroughly with a brush.
Step 4: Using the same brush, paint the heart with the first coat of mixture. Don’t worry about making a crisp and defined heart shape. You can let it bleed outside the drawn shape since we are going for the gradient/sprinkled effect. Let the first coat dry for 10-15 minutes and add 3-4 more coats while letting each one dry before applying the next.
Step 5: Take the second brush and dab a tiny bit of the mixture on it. Flick the brush on the cover making sure to sprinkle the mixture off the brush to the cover instead of splattering. Concentrate the sprinkles closer to the heart shape and repeat as necessary.
There you have your sparkly pillow cover! Let it dry overnight before putting it back on the pillow.

This would be a fun present for anyone or for your own home. Experiment with different color pillow cases and different designs. Take a look at my Home Decor Pinterest Board for more ideas! If you have tips on working with glitter, please share them in the comments below. I hope you enjoyed this DIY, Happy early Valentine’s Day to all of you!

I love this and really want to give it a go. I have never used Modge Podge before. Hopefully I can buy it in Australia! Can you tell me if this would be able to be washed or if the Modge Podge and glitter would come off in the wash? Thank-you

    • HIGHonDIY February 3, 2015 at 11:23 AM #

Thanks Mallory! Someone suggested there is a special Modge Podge for fabrics, maybe that will be better suited. If you need to wash it, I would suggest hand washing it inside out.

Hey! I was wondering if I could use the Mod Podge for Fabric for this DIY. Would it still have the same effect?

    • HIGHonDIY March 22, 2014 at 7:28 PM #

Mahek, I haven’t tried it and I’m sure it will work as well! Let me know if you try 🙂

  15. Missy February 2, 2013 at 9:18 AM #

This looks fun, and I love the results!! Question: Does the glitter get everywhere during use? Does it flake off a lot over time? Clearly, it is more of a decorative pillow than a napping pillow. I don’t really have any experience with mod podge, so this may be a dumb question.

    • HIGHonDIY February 2, 2013 at 11:24 AM #

Thanks Missy! It is definitely for decorative purposes only. Since we mixed the glitter with modge podge, it doesn’t get everywhere when applying. I would stil paint it over a few layers of newspaper. Since we sealed it with Modge Podge, it will act as a glue and hopefully not flake off after drying.
Let me know if you give this a try xx

      • TT January 21, 2014 at 12:33 PM #

You say you “sealed it with Modge Podge,” but there is no sealing step mentioned. Did you apply a Modge Podge-only coat overtop the glitter mixture after it dried? Or are you considering merely that gluing the glitter to the fabric using Modge Podge to be “sealing.” “Sealing” implies using a top coat over something, to create a more impervious layer.

        • HIGHonDIY January 27, 2014 at 12:12 PM #

TT, thanks for the clarifying! I think applying a Modge Podge only coat on top would help the glitter stay in place even more. For this DIY, I did not do that. I just mixed the glitter with Modge Podge.
